Fascinating piece. I've been writing for Medium for about a year (Shortform, Illumination, Better Humans, Crow's Feet etc) but am simply clueless when it comes to figuring out which publication might be best. I'm just a lifelong writer - highly resistant to "choosing a niche" - who works hard only to publish when I think I've something worth saying and know it's carefully crafted & edited. Wish it weren't so tricky, and now I'm sorry to have missed History of Yesterday! Thanks for this.
