As someone who remembers the bombing of Pearl Harbor and hearing President Roosevelt tell the country we were at war, I can promise you no one of my (immediately-post-'Greatest Generation') age in the U.S. believed it was Hitler's war alone. And though yes, isolationists were everywhere, the belief that we were Good fighting Evil quickly moved the U.S. into a largely unified patriotic spirit. Watching the horrors of today still makes me feel, sadly, that we learned nothing from the wars of the last century.
